Fellowship Program Benefits

Accelerate Your Psychiatric Career

An APA/APAF Fellowship is one of the most prominent honors a young psychiatrist can receive. Not only does it signal to employers that you are an emerging voice in the psychiatric community, it also bestows mentorship and experiential learning opportunities that can only be offered by the APA and APA Foundation. Your network will grow exponentially, you'll join the invite list for exclusive APA events and meetings, and you'll be given leadership opportunities that will accelerate your career and broaden your psychiatry expertise.

What APA Foundation Fellows Receive:

  • Free attendance at the APA's Annual Meeting, Mental Health Services Conference, and Fall Fellowship Forum
  • Support the Federal/State Advocacy Conference*
  • Support underserved minority groups through community-based outreach
  • Attend monthly lectures on timely psychiatric topics
  • Join an APA component or committee
  • Publish blog or resource content with the APA/APA Foundation

In addition to the universal benefits, different fellowships offer unique benefits based on the fellowship subject. You may choose to spend time lobbying on Capitol Hill, perform hands-on outreach within minoritized communities, and much more. Regardless of how you choose to sharpen your skillset, you'll walk away from your fellowship with a diverse peer community and deeper expertise in your sub-field of choice.

Mentorship

The Program pairs Fellows with a different mentor each year of their Fellowship to provide guidance and counsel as Fellows transition to practice, navigate their careers and become leaders in psychiatry. This relationship and others created during your fellowship will appreciate in value for decades to come. Develop personal relationships with APA leaders across the country, learn from and alongside seasoned APA members and Fellowship Alumni, and gain the skills needed to be a compassionate mentor later in your career.

Networking

Psychiatry is a vast and constantly changing field. Meet new people, gain exposure to innovative ideas, meet APA Leadership, and stay abreast of trending topics in the field by integrating into the APA community. Our robust Alumni community allows for connections to be made and fostered for years to come. Connections are made through attendance at APA Annual Meetings, and other events throughout the year.

Professional Development

The Professional Development Series is geared toward developing transferable skills for resident Fellows to prepare for the career transition beyond training. The series is designed to broaden Fellows’ career perspectives and develop competencies in areas such as leadership, communication, self-awareness, and professionalism. The Professional Development Series is hosted by expert APA Members and topics include, wellness, burnout, how to negotiate a contract, taking insurance pros/cons, and many more.

  • "As an APA Foundation Fellow, I was able to participate in the SAMHSA Minority Fellowship. I had access to a huge network of mentors, and through the networking events, it gives you the opportunity to meet people in the profession who are doing things that you're interested in. And they sort of take you under their wing."
