Dr. Gaw was born in Lucena, Quezon Province, the Philippines, received his medical degree from the University of the East College of Medicine, the Philippines, in 1964. He was a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco.
Dr. Gaw was an internationally renowned psychiatrist who held appointments as Professor of Psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine, Professor and Director of Cross-Cultural Psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Lecturer on Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and Professor at the University of California at San Francisco.
Dr. Gaw served as the first Asian American Speaker of the Assembly from 2002–03, was a Distinguished Life Fellow, and was the recipient of the Kun-Po Soo award in 2006.
