Dr. Kim was born in Sinuiju in 1930, during the Japanese occupation of what is now North Korea. He devoted much of his life to helping the disenfranchised and voiceless in society through his work as a psychiatrist and community activist. He earned his medical degree from Seoul National University School of Medicine in 1956 and a doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the University of Arizona in Tucson.
Dr. Kim was a Distinguished Life Fellow of the APA, having been a member since 1967, an original charter member of the APA Task Force on Asian American Psychiatrists, and the first recipient of the Kun-Po Soo Award, presented in 1997.
