1987 Simon Bolivar Award Recipient
Lecture Title: Observing Violence: A Latin American View
Dr. Leon, born in Guaranda, Ecuador, earned his M.D. from the Universidad Central de Quito and later received a master’s degree in epidemiology from Tulane Medical School. Since 1957, he has served as a professor of psychiatry at the Universidad del Valle School of Medicine in Cali, Colombia, where he also chairs the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Leon is currently the director of the World Health Organization Collaborative Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health, also located in Cali. He has been honored with the Simon Bolivar Medal by Colombia’s Ministry of Education and is a recipient of the APA Simon Bolivar Award.
