Dr. Arana was born in Lima, Peru, and earned his medical degree at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima in 1967. He became an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Maryland Medical Center, where he had been working since his psychiatry residency in 1969. In 1980, Dr. Arana was appointed as the Hispanic American representative to the American Psychiatric Association Assembly and was a former president of the Maryland Psychiatric Society.
El Dr. Arana nació en Lima (Perú) y se licenció en medicina en la Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia de Lima en 1967. Se convirtió en profesor asociado de psiquiatría en el Centro Médico de la Universidad de Maryland, donde trabajaba desde su residencia en psiquiatría en 1969. En 1980, el Dr. Arana fue nombrado representante hispanoamericano en la Asamblea de la Asociación Psiquiátrica Americana y fue presidente de la Sociedad de Psiquiatría de Maryland.
