The Central State Hospital Cemetery is one of the most historically and emotionally important sections of the hospital campus. Having served as the final resting place for an estimated 700 deceased patients since the cemetery’s inception in 1939, it stands as a significant reminder of the unfathomable situations those at the hospital are in, as well as the uncomfortable truth that not everyone will successfully be treated or recover. As an active cemetery, this, the second rendition of a hospital burial ground, is the most impactful reminder of the potential loss of life within historic asylums.
