One of the registration types used by Central State Hospital included fourteen identifying characteristics per person admitted. The first patient was admitted to the hospital in 1868, when it was under the jurisdiction of the Freedmen's Bureau and located at Howard's Grove in Richmond. His diagnosis was epilepsy, and he died in 1870, prior to the official opening of the Central Lunatic Asylum as a segregated state facility.
