Dr. Bennett received her medical degree from the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1876. She became the first female Resident Physician of a psychiatric facility in 1880, when she was appointed to the Department for Women, State Hospital for the Insane for the South-Eastern District of Pennsylvania, at Norristown, PA.
In 1890, Dr. Bennett became the first female president of the Montgomery County (PA) Medical Society. She joined APA four years later and maintained a private psychiatric practice until about 1900.
