Dr. Spurlock earned her bachelor's degree from Spelman College in Atlanta and her medical degree in 1947 from Howard University's College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. She completed her residency at Cook County Psychopathic Hospital in 1950.
She served as a clinical professor at Georgetown Washington University and Howard University, chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Meharry Medical College, and the first director of the Office of Minority/National Affairs at APA. During her 17-year career at APA, she championed workforce diversity within psychiatry.
