Dr. Kenworthy was one of psychiatry's early female leaders. In 1913, she graduated from Tufts University Medical School and was the first woman physician at the Gardner State Colony for Chronic Mental Patients in Massachusetts, where she was in charge of 2,400 women patients. In 1917, she went to Foxborough State Hospital near Boston and instituted advanced care for the mentally ill.
In 1924, she became the director of the Bureau of Child Guidance and pioneered the development of psychiatric social work, teaching thousands of social workers during her 36 years at the New York School of Social Work. She became a member of APA (1915), was elected as the first female Vice President (1965), and received the Agnes Purcell McGavin Award (1971).
