Butler Hospital (also known as Butler Hospital for the Insane) was funded through a grant from the state legislature and funds contributed by Cyrus Butler. Dr. Isaac Ray, one of the original founders of the APA, became the first superintendent in 1845 and advocated for legal rights and humane treatment for patients.
The hospital opened its doors in 1847, making it the oldest hospital in the state of Rhode Island, and within two years, 124 patients were admitted. Today, Butler Hospital continues to adhere to its beliefs about treating patients with dignity and respect and is considered a national leader in developing the most comprehensive drug and alcohol treatment programs in the region.
