In 1830, the private Hudson Lunatic Asylum was established by Dr. Samuel White, who had been practicing medicine in Hudson, New York, since 1795. His son, Dr. George H. White, assisted in the daily operation of the hospital, and within the first ten years, three hundred patients were admitted.
Dr. White was a pioneer in the humane treatment of the mentally ill, and the majority of his patients were cured and greatly benefited from this method. The hospital closed when the state asylum at Utica opened, and his patients were transferred to this facility.
