In 1841, the Pennsylvania Asylum for the Insane was a private psychiatric hospital operating in West Philadelphia until its final closure in the fall of 1997. The hospital was built to address the need for space to house the growing number of patients from the famous Pennsylvania Hospital.
Dr. Thomas S. Kirkbride was the first superintendent, and he invited the superintendents of the various mental institutions in the U.S. to discuss the problems with the care of patients, which led to the founding of the APA. The first meeting took place in Kirkbride’s house on the grounds of the Pennsylvania Asylum for the Insane on October 16, 1844.
