Founded in 1825 by an act of the Virginia State Legislature, the state's second mental health facility admitted its first patient on July 24, 1828. In 1840, Dr. Francis T. Stribling was the first physician and superintendent of the Western Lunatic Asylum in Staunton, Virginia, and served until his death in 1874.
