IMGs in American Psychiatry: A Global Impact

This gallery honors International Medical Graduate (IMG) psychiatrists who have significantly contributed to healthcare delivery in the U.S. They provided leadership within the APA, advocated for IMG representation in training programs, and challenged barriers to inclusion in organized psychiatry and institutions. Established in 1979, the Committee on Foreign Medical Graduates succeeded earlier task forces and committees. It served as a national resource on issues affecting IMGs in psychiatry, addressing acculturation, credentialing, licensure, residency training, and continuing education.

In 1992, the George Tarjan Award Lecture was created to honor individuals who have made notable contributions to integrating IMGs into American psychiatry. Named after the APA’s first IMG president, this award highlights efforts to enhance IMG inclusion in the field.

I would like to extend a special thank you to Ramen Marwaha, M.D., and Richard Bolan, M.D., for their assistance on this project.
