Dr. Mezzich was born in Peru, the son of a Yugoslavian father and a Peruvian mother. He received his medical education at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru (1971), and trained in psychiatry and mathematical psychology at the Ohio State University (1971-1974). He is a Diplomate of ABPN, a Distinguished Life Fellow of APA, and served on various APA committees. He was the president of the World Psychiatric Association (2005-2008) and recipient of the Simon Bolivar Award (1997).
