During the APA Board of Trustees meeting in December 1973, APA President Alfred Freeman, M.D., convened a press conference to endorse the Nomenclature Committee's proposal, led by Robert Spitzer, M.D., to remove homosexuality from DSM-II. The Board of Trustees approved this proposal.
The decision was reported in the January 2, 1974, issue of Psychiatric News, stating that the APA Board of Trustees had determined "homosexuality by itself does not necessarily constitute a psychiatric disorder."
