Senator Paul D. Wellstone (D-Minn) was a leader in seeking to reform the nation's health care system. He introduced the Healthy Americans Act, a bill designed to provide affordable and comprehensive health care coverage for all, and was a fierce advocate for a Patients Bill of Rights.
In 1996, Congress passed Senator Wellstone's Mental Health Parity Act, legislation he authored with Senator Pete Domenici (R-NM), which was an important first step toward requiring insurance companies to provide coverage for mental illness in the same manner as other physical illnesses. In 2000, the Honorable Senator Wellstone received the APA's Distinguished Service Award, honoring him for his exceptional service to American psychiatry.
