In 1971, Dr. Charles Prudhomme presented the portrait of Solomon Carter Fuller, MD, the first black member of the APA, to Dr. Robert Garber at the board of trustees meeting. Dr. Prudhomme commissioned the portrait as a gift to the Association and asked that Mrs. Naida Willette Page, the staff artist for the Journal of the National Medical Association, be commissioned as the artist.
