Dr. Wilkinson graduated from Virginia Union University in 1941, received his M.D. from Howard University in 1944, and served his internship and assistant residency in internal medicine from 1945–47 at Freedman's Hospital. Dr. Wilkinson was a resident in neuropsychiatry at the University of Colorado Medical Center and received the M.S. in psychiatry from the University of Colorado in 1949.
He taught in the Howard University neuropsychiatry department from 1950 to 1955 and was an associate professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia and the University of Kansas Medical Center from 1959 to 1965.
In addition, he was a former trustee and treasurer of the APA from 1976 to 1980. He was the former chairman of the Committee of Black Psychiatrists and the past president of the Black Psychiatrists of America (BPA).
