Dr. Tweedy received his medical degree from Duke in 2000 and graduated from Yale Law School in 2003 before returning to Duke to complete his medical and psychiatric training in 2007. He is an associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Duke University School of Medicine Department. Within the medical school, he is a small-group leader for the Practice Course, which introduces medical students to basic and advanced aspects of the doctor-patient relationship.
Dr. Tweedy has published articles about race and medicine in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and The Annals of Internal Medicine. His book, “Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor's Reflections on Race and Medicine,” explores the intersection of race and medicine through the lens of his experience as a medical student, medical intern, and psychiatry resident. The book was a New York Times Best Seller and TIME magazine top ten nonfiction books of 2015. In 2017, he was recognized for his contribution to psychiatry and was the recipient of the Solomon Carter Fuller Award.
