2022 Solomon Carter Fuller Award Recipient
Lecture Title: Beyond Cultural Competency: Contemporary Psychiatry in a Raced Society
Dr. Powell serves as a psychoanalyst at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research and the Psychoanalytic Association of New York (NYU). Additionally, she holds positions as adjunct assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and clinical assistant professor of psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College. She obtained her medical degree in 1984 from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, followed by residency training in 1985 at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
Dr. Powell is a prolific speaker and writer on topics related to race, racism, and gender issues. Notably, she serves as the Section Editor for Racial and Ethnic Diversity for Glen Gabbard's Textbook of Psychotherapeutic Treatments, Second Edition, 2022. Engaged in full-time private practice, Dr. Powell holds the distinction of being an APA Life Member. Her contributions to education were recognized with the 2021 Candidate's Council of the American Psychoanalytic Association Master Teacher of the Year Award, and she was honored with the Solomon Carter Fuller Award in 2022.
