Dr. Butts received a Bachelor of Science from City College of New York in 1949 and his Doctor of Medicine from Meharry Medical College, Nashville, in 1953. He interned at Morrisania Hospital in 1956 and did his residency at the Bronx Veterans Administration Hospital in 1958. Dr. Butts was a member of the APA's Black Caucus.
