Dr. Bland received her medical degree from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine, in 1974 and specialized in adolescent psychiatry at Northwestern University Medical School and the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. She was Associate Chairman at LSU School of Medicine and was Regional Administrator/CEO for the State of Louisiana Office of Mental Health.
Dr. Bland was an authority on the role of culture and diversity in psychiatry practice and education. In 2004, APA established the Irma Bland Award for Excellence in Teaching Residents.
