2024 Solomon Carter Fuller Award Recipient
Lecture Title: This Is Our Lane: A Call to Action for Psychiatry in Adolescent Gun Violence
Dr. Bailey earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and completed his residency in general psychiatry at the University of Texas at Houston, Texas Medical Center Affiliated Hospital. He furthered his expertise with a fellowship in forensic psychiatry at Yale University’s Department of Psychiatry in Connecticut. Dr. Bailey's distinguished career includes serving as Chairman and Professor of Psychiatry at Meharry Medical College in Tennessee from 2008 to 2014, as well as holding the position of Executive Director of the Lloyd C. Elam Mental Health Center in Tennessee.
Currently, Dr. Bailey holds the esteemed role of Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, a position he has held since January 2015. He is recognized as a diplomat of the American Board of Forensic Medicine. Dr. Bailey's extensive professional engagements include serving as Chairman of the AAPL Scientific Program in 2005 and directing the Forensic Fellowship programs at both Louisiana State University and the University of Texas-Houston. He is an esteemed member of the American College of Psychiatry and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, as well as the current Chairman of Membership for the APA.
Additionally, Dr. Bailey has held leadership positions as president and board member of the National Medical Association from 2012 to 2013 and as president of the Tennessee Psychiatric Association from 2012 to 2014. He is recognized as an APA Distinguished Life Fellow and was honored with the 2024 Solomon Carter Fuller Award.
