Dr. Hernandez graduated from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN, in 1928 and served his residency in New York at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, specializing in neurology and psychiatry, from 1928–1930. He served as chief of psychiatry and neurology services at the VA Hospital in San Juan from 1947–1954, and chief of the neurology service at Tuskegee VA Hospital from 1954–1955.
In 1965, he was appointed chief of neurology, psychiatry, and EEG services at the VA Hospital in Murfreesboro, TN. Dr. Hernandez was elected a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association in 1942 and a Life Fellow in 1968.
