Dr. Adams, the first Black psychiatrist in Chicago, received his medical degree from Howard University in 1926. He joined the medical faculty at Western Reserve University in Cleveland and, in 1931, received a fellowship to study psychiatry at Boston Psychopathic Hospital.
Before accepting the post at Provident Hospital in 1951, Dr. Adams had a private practice and was a psychiatrist in the juvenile court branch of the institute for juvenile research operated by the state. It was there that he began his study of narcotics addicts and their rehabilitation.
