John S. McIntyre, M.D.

Dr. McIntyre was born in New York, New York. He received an A.B. from Notre Dame University in 1963 and his M.D. from the University of Rochester Medical School in 1967. His psychiatric residency was taken at Strong Memorial Hospital and the University of Rochester (1968–69) and (1971–73). He spent the internship years as a major in the U.S. Army Hospital at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Following completion of residency, he remained in Rochester in private practice and on the psychiatric faculty of the Medical School.

Dr. McIntyre was involved with the American Psychiatric Association for many years. He was President of his District Branch (1980), Representative of his local area to the Assembly (1984–86), and Speaker of the Assembly (1988). He held many major offices and chaired or served on other committees and components of the APA. He was Vice President of the New York Psychiatric Society (1980). During his APA presidency, he fostered relations with the NAMI, the National Mental Health Association, and the National Depressive and Manic Depressive Association. He was involved in the establishment of the APA Proactive Research Network and has served as Chair of the Steering Committee since its establishment. He also served as Chair of the Steering Committee for the issuance of the APA Practice Guidelines.

Dr. McIntyre served as President of the American Psychiatric Association (1993–94).
