Mary Jane England, M.D.

Dr. England was born in Boston, Massachusetts, received her M.D. (1964) from Boston University School of Medicine, interned at Framingham Union Hospital (1964-65) and took residency (1965-69) at University Hospital in Boston, Mount Zion Hospital in San Francisco, California, and Boston University-City Hospital Child Guidance Clinic.  

Dr. England served as Director of Child Psychiatry at St. Elizabeths Hospital, Brighton, Massachusetts (1969-72); Director of Clinical Psychiatry at Brighton-Allston Mental Health Clinic, (1972-74); Director of Manpower and Planning for Children Services, (1974-76) and Associate Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Social Services, (1976-79) and Commissioner (1979-83); Associate Dean and Director of the Littauer Marter in Public Administration Program of the Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University, (1983-87); Vice-President, Medical Services Prudential Insurance Company of American, (1982-90); President of the Washington, D.C., Business Group on Health, (1990-2001); and since then, President of Regis College in Weston, Massachusetts.  

Dr. England has been a member of many professional organizations. She has served as a trustee, on advisory boards, and as a consultant to numerous colleges and federal and national organizations. She has also contributed to the literature of psychiatry. 

Dr. England’s accomplishments and services have been recognized by numerous awards, among them are the Distinguished Alumnae Award, Boston University School of Medicine, 1984; the Mumford Award of Columbia University, 1993; the Alexandra Seymour Award, Association of Women Psychiatrists, 1999; the Action for Boston Community Development Award, 2003; the Elizabeth Blackwell Award, American Women’s Medical Association, 2004; and the Saul Feldman Award, American College of Mental Health Administrators, 2004.  

Dr. England has been Vice President of the National Academy of Public Administration, 1998; Vice President of the Association of Women Psychiatrists (1987–91); Vice President of the American Medical Women’s Association (1984–85); Vice President of the United Way of Massachusetts Bay (1974–87); and President, Board of Directors of Action for Boston Community Development (1973–75).

Dr. England has served on numerous committees at the Institute of Medicine and the APA.  She served as Treasurer of the APA (1990–94 )and President (1995-96).
