Dr. Yamamoto was born in Los Angeles, California, and received his medical degree in 1949 from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Dr. Yamamoto was one of the world's best-known cross-cultural experts and was recognized for his life-time career devoted to the needs of patients in the public sector, enlightening the psychiatric profession about the impact of cultural factors affecting mental illness. Dr. Yamamoto was recognized as a Distinguished Life Fellow member after joining APA in 1951.
