Dr. Pasnau was born in Mason. City, Iowa. He received his medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago and completed his residency in psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine.He was Assistant Dean of the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Medicine, a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, and Director of UCLA Mental Health Services for Physicians in Training. He was Associate Director of the Division of Adult Psychiatry at UCLA Neuropsychiatric Hospital and Director of Professional Relations and Alumni Affairs at UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute. Dr. Pasnau served as APA president and in numerous other roles within APA, including speaker of the Assembly, chairperson of the Council on National Affairs, and chairperson of the Joint Reference Committee. He was past president of the American College of Psychiatrists and a founding fellow and past president of the Pacific Rim College of Psychiatrists. A member of the Journal Advisory Committee of the American Psychiatric Press, Inc., and a member of the Editorial Board of General Hospital Psychiatry.
