Lecture Title: International Cooperation in Mental Health in the Americas: An Agenda for the New Millennium
Dr. Gaviria, born in Chiclayo, Peru, earned his medical degree from San Marcos University in Lima in 1966 and completed his residency at the Illinois State Psychiatric Institute in Chicago. He began his academic career at the University of Illinois, where he taught for 30 years. During his tenure, he helped establish the first affective disorder clinic in Chicago and later the Neuropsychiatric Center. Dr. Gaviria was one of the founders of the International Neuropsychiatric Association (INA) and a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).
