Dr. Canive, born in Cuba, left the country shortly after Fidel Castro came to power and moved to Spain to pursue his medical studies. He earned his M.D. from the Universidad Complutense in Madrid, Spain, in 1966, then moved to the U.S. for an internship in New York City. He later completed his psychiatric residency at McGill University in Canada, beginning in 1972. Dr. Canive has made significant contributions to the understanding of psychosocial factors in schizophrenia and the role of ethnic factors in psychopathology. One of his notable research achievements was his pioneering work on auditory processing in schizophrenia using magnetoencephalography (MEG), for which he received ongoing research support from the NIH.
