In October 1844, Drs. Galt, Stribling, and Awl were members of a sub-committee assigned to answer the question of whether there needed to be separate asylums for blacks with lunacy. Dr. Galt concluded that racial separation was not medically required, while Dr. Stribling concluded that separate asylums were needed because of extensive differences in culture by race. Dr. Stribling's position prevailed with legislative support for opening the Central Lunatic Asylum. Their association became the American Psychiatric Association.
