In 1882, the legislature appropriated $2000 for plans and $100,000 for construction of a hospital building in the location of the old Mayfield/Whitworth farm. By the end of the 1883 fiscal year, construction was under way, following the 19th century asylum design style known as the Kirkbride Plan.
Dr. Thomas Story Kirkbride's design for asylums was used throughout the U.S. and internationally. Construction was completed in the spring of 1885 and 373 patients from Howard's Grove were moved to the new Petersburg hospital.
