The original design of the Central Lunatic Asylum was based on the widely accepted architectural model known as Kirkbride. The design was created in the mid-1900s by psychiatrist Dr. Thomas S. Kirkbride, the first secretary of the APA, and included a four-story center wing for administration and offices, with three-story wings on either side with six wards each for patients and attendants.
