Mayfield House, c. 1750, is the oldest brick dwelling in Dinwiddie County. It was the main house on the Mayfield/Whitworth farm. The Whitworth's sold the property to the City of Petersburg in 1882, and Petersburg then transferred the 290-acre farm to the Commonwealth of Virginia for use as the Central Lunatic Asylum. The original hospital building was closely constructed to Mayfield House, and the house was used as a residence for physicians. The structure was moved in later years to make room for new buildings. It is now privately owned.
