This gallery celebrates and honors the contributions of female psychiatrists who have played a vital role in medical history. Their resilience and dedication in achieving leadership positions are exemplified by the women featured here.
The Committee on Women, established in 1975 as a successor to a previous task force, was instrumental in advancing the role of women in psychiatry. The Committee identified and addressed the mental health needs of women, advocated for greater involvement of women psychiatrists in academic, research, administrative, and professional organizations, and created strategies to enhance their participation and leadership. These efforts also spurred research and the development of theories that supported the advancement of women colleagues in the field.
Today, women comprise 40% of the APA's membership, and because of these pioneers, more women are in leadership roles than ever before. Read more about the library exhibit in Psychiatric News.
