Barbara Gittings (1932–2007), founder of the New York City Chapter of the Daughters of Bilitis, and Frank Kameny, Ph.D. (1925–2011), co-founder of the Washington, D.C., branch of the Mattachine Society, were gay-rights activists who persuaded the APA to change the diagnosis of homosexuality in the DSM. In 2006, Gittings and Kameny were the first recipients to be awarded APA's John Fryer, M.D. Award.
