Clifford Beers was hospitalized three times for mental illness, and published an autobiographical account of his experience titled, A Mind That Found Itself in 1908. His book served as the beginning of the "mental hygiene movement" – the precursor to the patient advocate movement to reform and reduce stigma of those with mental illness.
In 1909, Clifford Beers founded the National Committee for Mental Hygiene. Its mission was to improve the care and treatment of mental illness, improve standards of care, encourage research, and organize preventative services.
