Betty Ford fought for important causes, including breast cancer awareness, after her mastectomy in 1974. She became a symbol and advocate for substance use disorder treatment, and her efforts helped destigmatize addiction and substance use disorders. In 1982, she established the Betty Ford Center (formerly known as the Betty Ford Clinic), inspired by her own recovery from alcoholism.
