William Tuke, a British philanthropist and Quaker, opened The Retreat in York, England, in 1792 for the new, humane care of people with mental illness, as a pioneer of moral treatment, managing patients without physical restraints. He was a mental health reformer and devoted his work to improving the treatment of those diagnosed as insane.
