NEWSLETTER of the BPA, Vol. 1, No. 1, Fall 1969
The Black Psychiatrists of America (BPA) was established in 1969. The creation of the BPA was driven by the social conditions, professional experiences, and barriers encountered by Black psychiatrists, who consistently grappled with the task of influencing and bringing about change in American psychiatry. Its establishment marked the imperative of progressing to ensure the emotional and psychological development of African Americans. To achieve this objective, the founders aimed to provide tools that would enable African Americans to cope and thrive in the face of persistent racism.
